What To Bring On A NAV4 Weekend?

You will probably have most of what you need, especially if you have already entered any adventure races or mountain marathons, but we do assume you will come equiped with personal clothing to keep you warm in bad weather. Saturday's Equipment seminar will provide further advice regarding clothing and equipment, so you may wish to delay expensive purchases until after the course. As a guide you will need:

  • Sense of humour and a Spirit of adventure.
  • General outdoor clothing, including a Waterproof jacket, warm leg wear and hat.
  • Rucsac, Running shoes or boots, a several pairs of socks. (Wet feet are inevitable)
  • Water bottle / drinks, Snack food for each day.
  • Compass - Try and master the basic theories before you come. The 'Silva' range is recommended, in particular model numbers 'Field 7', 'Ranger 3' or 'Expedition 4'
  • Headtorch - for 'Night Navigation' evening session.
  • Map - you need to bring your own map so you can refer to it both before and after the weekend. Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure 4 North Western Lakes is the relevant map.
  • We recommend Martin Bagness's excellent book, 'Navigation for Mountain Runners'  which is now out of print, but an new updated eBook version is available for download via www.lakesrunner.com for only £5. Other notable Lake District based shops worthy of a visit either in person or via the web are www.needlesports.com, and www.peteblandsports.co.uk. All three shops will offer advice and sell you good gear.

We usually have a few compasses and headtorches for loan, trial, or sale, as well as a few bargain bits of gear.
