Nature of the Event and Route . . .

This year the route will be three days each averaging approximately '26.2' mountain miles with the total not being inaccess of 80miles. There will be considerable amount of ascent although thenature of the route will be 'mountain trails'; ie, a variety of paths, trailsand open terrain. Route choice is very much up to the individual and excellentnavigational skills and complete self-reliance are required. Individual supportteams are not allowed. Check points are few and far between, and will mainly be less frequented or minor tops, or tarns, or footbridges rather than thesheepfolds or re-entrants, etc. This gives you good route choice options andrelatively good terrain underfoot. Expect ridges and valleys rather thancontouring and bog fests. There will be no route description, only checkpointgrid references and descriptions. Participants should expect to take between 6and 12 hours each day. GL3D is a small friendly event with a friendlyatmosphere complementing the tough days. It is not a race, no prizes are given, but every participant receives an event T-shirt.

Start, Finish and Overnight Camps.

The event will start and finish at a venuesomewhere in Cumbria, which will be confirmed in your final details sent to youin April. The event will start from there on Saturday morning, returning hereon Monday afternoon. Entrants are expected to camp at the overnight sitesprovided. Campsites will be relatively comfortable compared to the typicalMountain Marathon sites, but more remote than in previous years. There will betwo separate camp sites for Saturday and Sunday nights. Be warned - pub mealsand cafes will not feature in either evening venue this year. A small supply ofbread and milk will be available at each campsite - 'a beer' may be a fair walkaway, and only accessible to the very eager, or desperate.

Baggage Transfer

A limited amount of baggage will be transported for youfrom the start to the finish each day. You will need to select and pack this carefullyapplying a mountain marathon mentality. Your tent, cooking gear, food and allspare clothing must be packed in this baggage, and it must not weigh more than12 kgs. This is a generous allowance if you pack correctly, and is imposed forlogistical reasons.  Your equipmentmust be contained in a waterproof Ortlieb type 'Dry-Bag' (Ortlieb size Large59Litres capacity)Many of you will have these from previous years and will wantto use them again. Only this type of bag, or a very similar make and size willbe acceptable and may be very necessary in order to keep your gear dry.

Entry Fee

The inclusive cost of £70 covers camping for three nights, (Friday, if you need it, Saturday and Sunday)  event T-shirt, bread and milk, baggage transfer, logistics, finish line refreshments, postage and results, and all other administrative costs. You are advised to enter early as places will be limited to just 50 entrants. A reserve list will be held if oversubscribed. You will be contacted if your entry is not accepted - email receipt of entry will be sent, and your cheque will be banked. To enter please complete and return the form. Cheques payable to 'Joe Faulkner'. There is no need for a SAE. If you have any questions then please contact me on 07749 364 248 or email.

You need to provide your own map. I shall be using the Harvey 'BMC' map of The Lake District to plan the event and recommend this toyou. It is at a scale of 1:40k and covers the whole Lakes area on one sheet. You can use other maps, if you wish, but you will need more than one for eachday! Further details of this will be given at a later date in your 'FinalDetails'. Dry Bags and Maps can bebought from many retailers - The Climbers Shop in Ambleside is recommended forefficient mail order - www.climbers-shop.com
