Dockray Fell Races 2015

Dockray – Hartside – Wed 6th May

Dockray – Great Dodd – Wed 10h June

There is a long history of fell races at Dockray, and the tradition continues with two evening races for 2015.

The races are simple friendly events, and each race starts outside The Royal Hotel, at Dockray and finishes nearby.     Races start at 7pm with entries taken on the evening of the race, from  6pm, at the ‘Quarry Car Park’.

As with any proper fell race you’ll need your fell running shoes and the usual fell running kit; a waterproof jacket is essential ….short shorts and string vest optional.

Dockray-Hartside – Wednesday 6th May
7pm start – 10km / 800m ascent – Registration from 6.00pm – £3.00pm Entry on the day
Please park at the Quarry Car Park 600m towards Aira Force. (Now National Trust Pay and Display)

Registration is at this car park; please do not park at the Royal Hotel or in the village at Dockray.

The route starts from outside The Royal Hotel, at Dockray and runs up the lane to High Row and out onto the open fell. From there you have free route choice between the three checkpoints on this race.

CP1 – High Brow (spot height 575m) at Grid Reference 367 214.

CP2 – Hart Side GR 359 197 – on some maps this is marked as Hart Crag.

CP3 – Common Fell GR 382 204

Finish – at the fell gate at the end of small the lane GR 392 215. This is about 150 metres from where you started, near the phone box and green shed and so a short jog back to your car.

Please come and have a drink in The Royal afterwards.

Dockray-Great Dodd – Wednesday 10th June
7pm Start – 15km / 1100m ascent – Registration from 6.00pm – £3.00 Entry on the day

This race is an extended version of Dockray-Hartside sharing the same start and finish checkpoints.   It is actually the original ‘Medium’ Dockray race, which ran on the same Saturday as the full length Dockray race dating from the 1980’s.  Sadly, due to various reasons the longer racers are no longer run, but the course is a tremendous blast as and survives as a Wednesday evening race.

The route is a natural horseshoe around Deepdale. There is not a lot more climbing than the shorter race and it has some wonderful high level, grassy running. The route takes in the summits of Great Dodd and Stybarrow Dodd in addition to the three checkpoints used on Dockray-Hartside.   But don’t be fooled, this route can be tricky in mist or poor visibility, with the crux point being the route off Stybarrow Dodd!

Please park at the Quarry Car Park 600m towards Aira Force. (Now National Trust Pay and Display)

Registration is at this car park; please do not park at the Royal Hotel or in the village at Dockray.
